BMW i Ventures Invests in GenXComm to Speed 5G Implementation

BMW i Ventures has made an investment in GenXComm to increase the speed of global 5G deployment. As part of the announcement, the companies note that 5G has become a much-needed advancement, especially as it concerns future mobility. BMW i Ventures says the investment stems from their belief that GenXComm is facilitating the “next revolution” in connectivity.

“GenXComm’s technology will rapidly increase the speed of 5G penetration that is critical for the future of connected vehicles,” said Marcus Behrendt, partner, BMW i Ventures. “Autonomous systems, like self-driving cars, are essentially data centers on wheels, and require fast, low latency connections.”

Reducing Cost

GenXComm has developed a new technology that will allow cellular operators to deploy 5G using relays and integrated access to backhaul their wireless transmissions without waste. According to the company, GenXComm’s technology can reduce the cost of implementing 5G by up to 80 percent.

Reducing Complexity

Traditional electronic devices do not transmit and receive data simultaneously on the same frequency. The intensity of data transmission ends up nulling the signal. As a result, GenXComm says electronic devices are wasteful as they must transmit and receive on different frequencies using twice the spectrum, or transmit and receive at different times taking twice as long.

“Our technology improves performance networks, meaning consumers will have supercharged mobile connections in addition to major cost savings,” said Dr. Sriram Vishwanath, Co-founder and CEO of GenXComm. “We’re looking to use technology to change the world, from cell phones to machine learning capabilities to WiFi, and infinite other use cases.”

Proponents of 5G say it can be a precursor for the future of telecommunications, including 6G and Wi-Fi 6.
